Planetary Defense Coordination Office
For decades, NASA has been studying near-Earth objects (NEOs)—asteroids and comets that orbit the Sun and come within 30 million miles (48,280,320 km) of Earth's orbit. Studying NEOs enhances scientific understanding of the birth and formation of our solar system. However, some NEOs follow trajectories that pose potential impact hazards to our planet.
In 2016, NASA established the Planetary Defense Coordination Office (PDCO) to manage the agency's diverse and rapidly expanding efforts in the "applied planetary science" of planetary defense.
